The Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by Dorothy T. Rainwater and Judy Redfield is considered by most collectors to be the go-to source for identifying the makers marks on American silver. Nearly all of the marks listed in the book are accompanied by the maker’s history. While most of the makers marks are from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, a few of the most important makers of the seventeenth century are listed as well. The fourth edition is the most complete edition available and was the last edition authorized by Dorothy T. Rainwater and Judy Redfield.
